The Children’s Guild Foundation has awarded a three-year $250,000 grant to a Roswell Park Cancer Institute researcher to continue his work to find the major genes that cause Down syndrome.

Y. Eugene Yu, associate professor in the Department of Cancer Genetics, directs one of the few laboratories in the world with the capability to replicate chromosomal changes found in diseases such as Down syndrome, a disorder caused by a condition known as Trisomy 21. In the United States, Trisomy 21 occurs in approximately 1 in 733 births.

Yu’s research has implications for cancer, officials said.
