The snow falling in downtown Buffalo this afternoon may look ominous, but there’s no need to worry about it piling up like it has south of the city.
An upper-level disturbance crossing the area is enhancing the lake-effect snow, bringing a more widespread snowfall, according to Jeff Wood, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
“The heaviest snow will be across the Southern Tier, but the Buffalo metro area will likely see the snow showers, as well,” Wood said this afternoon.
Up to 2 inches may accumulate in the metro area tonight, with another inch Friday, Wood said.
Meanwhile, points south of East Aurora and the Boston Hills probably will pick up another 3 to 6 inches tonight, and 2 to 4 inches on Friday. A lake-effect snow warning for those areas, which also includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties, remains in effect until noon Friday.
Since Tuesday night, more than a foot of snow has fallen in the warning areas.
So when will it start looking – and feeling – like spring?
“Not any time soon,” Wood said.
Temperatures will drop to the mid-20s tonight and hover around freezing Friday.
“We might creep up to 40 by the latter half of the weekend,” Wood said, but chilly weather is expected to remain at least through early next week.
