The Town of Elma has been approached by New York State Electric & Gas to reopen a permit process for a 300-foot communications tower.
The utility wants to build the tower, which will require a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals, on a 32.1-acre parcel on Stolle Road near Creek Road – the site of the utility’s substation.
NYSEG representatives said the new tower will allow them to monitor nearby substations and enable the rerouting of power more quickly.
In addition, NYSEG wants to build an equipment shelter that would be fenced in.
In other matters last week, the board discussed tearing down a 40-year-old concrete building at Creek Road Park that currently houses the power source for the site and is used to store sports equipment, a tractor and maintenance equipment for the town.
The old building is in danger of falling. A new and larger building has been proposed.
Board members discussed a multi-purpose structure that would include an announcer’s tower. Councilman Thomas Fallon said EMW Sports Inc., which fields sports teams for Elma, Marilla and Wales, has been urging that something be done about the building. The building is used primarily used by EMW football and baseball teams. Soccer teams have been storing equipment at a Seneca Street site.
“The time is now before it’s critical,” Supervisor Dennis Powers said.
The supervisor, who noted the town has some funding available for the project in its parks budget, added that Marilla and Wales might be able to pony up some money.
In other matters, Aurora Consulting previewed the town’s new website, which will be launched in a few weeks.
The website was designed for easier navigation so residents will be able to find documents, meeting agendas and minutes for past meetings. There will be a photo gallery and a larger search bar.
