Two state lawmakers are proposing legislation they say will reform the process of developing a Niagara River Greenway.

State Sen. Mark Grisanti and Assemblyman Sean Ryan, in a news release, said their legislation will “create new boundaries and definitions of projects that can be funded.”

Under state law, the Niagara River Greenway was to be a linear parks and trails system connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario along the Niagara River. The New York Power Authority, under a 50-year deal for the re-licensing of its Niagara Power Project, provides $9 million in annual funding for Greenway projects.

A recent report by the Partnership for the Public Good found that of the $50 million spent so far, roughly half has gone to projects that are far from the river.

The legislators will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Friday at Black Rock Canal Park to talk about their proposal.
