Ohio Street reconstruction to start this fall

Ohio Street will remain open next year during an $11.3 million reconstruction that will transform the industrial street into a tree-lined parkway.

The new parkway, which was previously announced, will be built between Michigan Avenue and Fuhrmann Boulevard, and link Buffalo’s inner and outer harbors.

Funding includes $8.15 million in federal Highway Administration funds, $1.03 million from the harbor development corporation and $1.2 million from the City of Buffalo.

Bids are expected to go out at the end of July and preparatory work is to begin this fall. Construction is to be completed by the summer of 2015.

Mayor Byron Brown, Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, and Robert Gioia, chairman of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp., made the announcement Thursday morning.
