The Buffalo City Mission is up for sale – for the right price, that is.
But no one has come forward to buy it.
Stuart L. Harper, chief executive officer at the City Mission, said officials are open to the possibility of selling the 100 E. Tupper St. property.
The location, which has housed the mission’s administrative offices and the Men’s Center shelter since 1984, could be attractive to developers because of its proximity to the burgeoning 120-acre Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and the various projects under way there. They include Conventus, a 300,000-square-foot medical office building under construction on the block bounded by Main, High, Ellicott and Goodrich streets; a new, 10-story, Women & Children’s Hospital to be built for about $200 million and renamed the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital; and plans by Albany Molecular Research to open a $250 million drug research, development and testing center.
“As more and more doctors’ offices and medical facilities are being built around us, if someone asked us if we are selling, we would have a conversation,” Harper said.
Harper stressed that no one has approached the board of directors about purchasing it.
“The board has not considered any offers,” Harper said. “No one has expressed an interest in the property.”
Buffalo City Mission offers long-term recovery programs, counseling, work and life-skills training, education assistance and health care services for homeless men, women and families committed to turning their lives around. It offers outreach programs to prevent homelessness for individuals and families in the low-income community, according to its website.
In addition to the men’s shelter at the East Tupper Street location, the mission also runs Cornerstone Manor shelter for women and children at North Street and Michigan Avenue.
