Work on the new athletic campus at Tonawanda High/Middle School is ramping up, but a few homeowners on nearby Adam Street are upset about the impact of the construction on their properties. The residents voiced their complaints to the Tonawanda School Board during a meeting Tuesday night.
Adam Street resident Beverly Ranney told the board she is concerned about the new Clint Small Stadium’s impact on flooding and drainage in her home.
The stadium “abuts right up against my property,” she said.
“They’ve raised (the grading) two to three feet. It appears it’s not going to take much to overflow. It’s going to back up in our basement, which it already has. My whole life is affected by what you’re doing here.”
Neighbor Dan Maxwell agreed, saying he spent all day removing water from his basement’s carpet.
“Something needs to be done about the drainage,” he said.
District officials offered no immediate comment on the complaints.
On another capital project, the board heard an update on the proposed redesign of a music wing at the high school building , which includes new band and choral rooms. Brian Brady of Wendel Duchscherer Architects said the new band room would have a raised ceiling of 17 feet to improve acoustics.
“The band room worked out great,” he said. “It’s a big, spacious room with great acoustics.”
The music wing renovations need to be approved by the state Education Department before any construction takes place, but Brady hopes it will be done in about two months.
The capital project budget has about $1 million in additional funds, and the district is considering using the money to upgrade its technology infrastructure.
Project coordinators offered several proposals to the board.
The top priority includes $200,000 for networking cables throughout school buildings.
The second priority involves $100,000 for the replacement of data switches in the Mullen and Riverview elementary schools.
