Buffalo Bills starting tight end Scott Chandler suffered a torn anterior-cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to Miami, coach Chan Gailey confirmed Monday.

“It’s bad. He’ll have to have surgery,” Gailey said.

The injury puts Chandler’s availability for the beginning of the 2013 season in jeopardy.

H-back Dorin Dickerson, who replaced Chandler in the lineup Sunday, was carted off the field with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter, but Gailey had a more favorable report on him.

“Not as bad as we thought, which was good. All the X-rays and everything were negative,” Gailey said. “He may even make a little bit of practice Wednesday.”

Gailey said Dickerson is expected to play in Sunday’s season finale at Ralph Wilson Stadium against the New York Jets, but that the team is considering whether it will have to add another tight end between then and now. The only true tight end on the roster, Lee Smith, is primarily a blocker.

“We’re looking at all the different things we might have to do between now and Wednesday,” Gailey said.

Safety Da’Norris Searcy also suffered a groin injury against the Dolphins and will miss the season finale against the Jets, Gailey said.

One of the biggest questions to come out of Sunday’s game was how the Bills approached their final drive. Buffalo took over possession with 5:51 remaining at its 15-yard line and drove to the Miami 1-yard line before quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was intercepted by Dolphins safety Reshad Jones.

“They were moving around with protections. We were trying to make sure we got protection right. [Fitzpatrick] had to change protection about three or four times because they were moving around and getting in some different looks. We wanted to make sure we got on the right people so we could get the ball off. That was the biggest thing that took the most time,” Gailey said.

“We’re up there ready to go and then they would give us a different look. He would want to get into a different protection. We had to walk back up, change the protection and get back again.”

...

Defensive end Mario Williams finished with two tackles and one pass defensed in 56 snaps (88 percent).

“I think all our guys played hard. I think everybody can make more plays and everybody can do a little bit more,” Gailey said. “Everybody can on every team throughout the NFL, but I think our guys played hard overall. I really do.

“Everybody puts him on a pedestal, in the limelight or whatever the term is that you use. That’s part of the business. He understands that. He has been there before and everybody that’s paid a lot of money, that automatically becomes your spot.”

...

Gailey hopes to have receiver Marcus Easley back playing some role in the season finale. With Chandler and Donald Jones out, the Bills are without their second- and fourth-leading receivers, respectively.
