Tops Friendly Markets is expected today to announce a major donation for a mother-baby unit in a new Kaleida Health children’s hospital downtown.
The gift, described as a multi-million dollar donation in the single digits, is among the largest in a $40 million public fundraising campaign for the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.
The proposed facility will go up at Ellicott and High streets, across from and connected by a walkway to Buffalo General Medical Center. Officials have said in the past that construction is expected to start later this year and be completed in 2016.
The mother-baby unit is where new mothers and their newborns go directly after labor and delivery, said John Moscato, hospital spokesman.
Other large previously announced donations include $10 million from the John R. Oishei Foundation; $5 million from Buffalo-area businessman Sal H. Alfiero, founder and former chairman of Mark IV Industries; $3 million from Fisher-Price Inc. and Mattel Inc.; $2 million from the New Era Cap. Co.; $2 million from the Children’s Guild Foundation; $1.5 million from the Habib and Habib Rittling families; and $1 million from the James H. Cummings Foundation.
So far, $34.6 million has been raised toward the fundraising goal for the hospital, which most recently was estimated to cost a total of $200 million.
Women & Children’s Hospital is moving to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Ground-breaking for the facility, which will be renamed after John R. Oishei, is expected in the spring and completion in early 2016.
The Conventus building, a Ciminelli Real Estate Corp. facility now under construction along Main Street, will connect to the new children’s hospital and incorporate some of its key services, such as acting as the entrance to a pediatric outpatient surgery center.
