Independent Living of Niagara County is hosting its eighth annual Bass Fishing Derby on Aug. 4 at the Lower Niagara River. Registration begins at 6 a.m. at Old Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown, followed by boat launch at 7 a.m., weigh-in at 1 p.m. Immediately following the derby will be an awards ceremony, family barbecue and theme basket auction at the Fin, Feather and Fur Conservation Society, 904 Swann Road, Lewiston. Fee is $75 with your own boat and $125 per person for boat, including breakfast, lunch and barbecue. Cost for barbecue only is $25 per person. For more information, call 836-0822, Ext. 181.

The Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service (NFRRS) is hosting a “Radio Reading Makes Cents Coin Drive” this summer. Area individuals, groups, clubs and companies are invited to collect coins to help keep the NFRRS on the air. The nonprofit local agency has volunteers that broadcast daily readings of newspapers, magazines, books and vital information to area blind and print-handicapped people. Coins can be dropped off any time this summer at the studios located at 1199 Harlem Road, Cheektowaga (between William and Clinton streets) or mailed to Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service, P.O. Canine Helpers for the Handicapped Inc., located at 5699 Ridge Road, Lockport, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to training dogs to assist people with disabilities to lead more independent and secure lives. Equipped to match a person with the right dog and train both to become an efficient team whether the need be for hearing, service, mobility (multi-service), seizure alert, or therapy dogs.
