Starting Sunday, people with disabilities who plan to ride Metro Rail will be asked to follow special boarding procedures as work continues on an overhaul of portions of the rail system’s track and track bed, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced Friday.
During Phase II of Metro Rail’s $1.6 million Main Street track bed renovation project, which starts Sunday and is expected to continue through the summer, the outbound side of the tracks will be closed from the portal outside Shea’s Performing Arts Center where trains segue below and above ground, to Chippewa Street.
Rail service will be restricted to the inbound side and passengers will have to transfer from one train to another at the Church Street Station. Trains will arrive about every 20 minutes during the period of modified service. Passengers with disabilities, particularly those with a mobility device, are asked to follow special boarding procedures until construction is complete.
Passengers with a mobility device who intend to exit at an above ground station are asked to board the first car of any inbound train from University Station through Allen Medical Station.
Those passengers should also board the last car of any inbound, above-ground train from Church or Seneca streets.
Outbound from the Erie Canal Harbor or Seneca Street stations, passengers with a mobility device should board the first car; those passengers should board the last car of outbound trains at Church Street, Lafayette, or Fountain Plaza stations.
