With the official opening of the 2013-14 theater season just weeks away, several companies have firmed up their production schedules.
The New Phoenix Theatre will open the season with the comedy “Venus in Fur” on Sept. 13, which runs through Oct. 5. Next up is “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer-winning play about a dysfunctional family, which runs from Oct. 18 to Nov. 9, followed by “HMS Bounty,” conceived by the New Phoenix company, running from Nov. 23 through Dec. 21.
The new year at New Phoenix begins with company founder Richard Lambert’s original play “Buffalo Moon,” opening March 21. Barbara Link LaRue will star in A.R. Gurney’s “Buffalo Gal,” which runs May 1 to 24.
Finally, the company will host two productions mounted by the newly formed Second Generation Theatre: Neil LaBute’s “Some Girl(s)” from Jan. 30 to Feb. 14, and Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins” from July 26 to Aug. 13.
The Kavinoky Theatre will begin its season with a world premiere musical by James Runfola, “The Big Band Theory: When Swing Was King,” opening Sept. 13 and running through Oct. 6. “Miracle on South Division Street,” by beloved Buffalo playwright Tom Dudzick, has the Kavinoky stage from Nov. 15 to Dec. 8.
“Proof,” by David Auburn, plays at the Kav from Jan. 10 to Feb. 2, followed by David Lindsay Abaire’s “Good People” from March 7 to 30. The final production in the Kavinoky season has not yet been announced.
The Jewish Repertory Theatre will present “A Life in the Theatre” by David Mamet, from Sept. 21 to Oct. 13; “Dai (Enough)” by Iris Bahr, from Feb. 6 to March 2; and “Body Awareness” by Annie Baker, from May 8 to June 1.
A new reading series curated by local playwright Frank Canino and known as “Bloody Sunday and Then Monday” will take place throughout the season in Buffalo East. Dates have not been nailed down yet, but featured plays include M.E.H. Lewis’ “Burying the Bones,” “The Old Glory: Benito Cereno” by Robert Lowell, and Canino’s “16671” and “Hecuba by Euripides.”
Local playwright Victoria Perez also announced the formation of Raíces, a new Latino theater company in residence at the Road Less Traveled Theatre. The company’s inaugural production of Carmen Rivera’s play “La Gringa” is slated for Dec. 5 to 8. The company also will host a reading series throughout the season, featuring works by Vincent Toro, José Rivera, Gustavo Ott and Kristoffer Diaz.
Meanwhile, Road Less Traveled Productions’ own New Play Workshop reading series will continue on Monday nights in its space in the Market Arcade Film & Arts Centre.
The fall schedule includes “Breakdown” by Katherine Boswell on Sept. 16, “Graffiti Theatre” by Susan Peters on Sept. 23, “The Apology” by Darryl Schneider on Sept. 30 and “SAFE” by Donna Hoke on Oct. 7.
