State Education Commissioner John B. King Jr. is in the Buffalo area today, at Erie 1 BOCES on Harlem Road in West Seneca.

It’s unclear why King came to the area today.

The state last week worked extensively with Buffalo Public Schools officials on turnaround plans for East and Lafayette high schools, Waterfront Elementary School and Buffalo Elementary School of Technology.

King had summoned district officials to Albany to meet with state officials in person to improve the plans, which had been rejected multiple times previously. At the conclusion of the session last week, state officials indicated the plans had been “properly completed.”

The state, however, still has not ruled on the district’s plans for addressing transfer requests from 2,200 students who are in low-performing schools and seeking seats in schools in good standing, as is their right under federal law.

The district’s plan included provisions to accommodate no more than 500 of the transfers requested. District officials said they did not have the capacity to transfer all the students this year to schools in good standing.
