Catholic Health is hosting a new stroke support group from 9 to 11 a.m. every second Saturday of the month at OLV Senior Neighborhood Community Room, 55 Melroy Ave., Lackawanna. Attendance is free and open to recently diagnosed stroke patients, long-term stroke survivors, family members and caregivers. Each meeting will include a guest speaker, group discussion and available resources to help participants better cope with the effects of stroke. Light refreshments will be served.

This week: Dr. James Czyrny, medical director of Rehabilitation Services for Catholic Health, will discuss “Rehab After Stroke,” followed by a question and answer period. For information or to register, call 447-6205 or email: chsbuffalo.org/events

The Stroke Support Group, sponsored by the department of rehabilitation medicine at Kaleida Health for stroke survivors, caregivers, family members and friends, will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. every second Thursday of the month at St. Jude’s Center, 760 Ellicott St. Designed to be a place for fun, support, education and to share ideas and resources in an open environment. Parent Network of Western New York is offering a free workshop, “Effective Communication: Bilingual,” from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Belle Center, 104 Maryland St. Participants will learn how to improve communication skills to effectively work with professionals who work with children who have a learning challenge or a disability. National Alliance on Mental Illness in Buffalo and Erie County, an education and support organization for families of the mentally ill, will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4007 Main St., Amherst. Bob Cohen of Citizen Action Public Policy and Education Fund will address, “How the affordable Health Care Act will affect the mentally ill.” For more information, call 226-6264.

Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled has an overnight children’s respite center in the Town of Tonawanda. The home is dedicated to serving children and families of Buffalo and surrounding areas. Overnight respite will be offered at the house on weekends, expanding to midweek in the near future. After-school services are available for adolescents with developmental disabilities to learn basic home, self-care and job readiness skills preparing them for independent living and adult responsibilities. The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming located at 18 Main St., Mount Morris, is a private, not-for-profit organization providing services to developmentally disabled individuals of all ages and their families in the Livingston and Wyoming counties. Through its residential, vocational rehabilitation, children’s services, transportation and community services programs, the agency helps to enhance the lives of more than 800 community members who rely on services each year. Families CAN (Child Advocacy Network), a division of Compeer of Greater Buffalo, offers a round-table discussion group for parents, caregivers or family members raising children with special social, emotional or behavioral needs so they can share experiences and learn about available resources. The National Parkinson’s Foundation of Western New York will resume monthly support group meetings for people with Parkinson’s disease and family members or caregivers. Meetings take place the third Wednesday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m., beginning Sept. 18 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 3512 Clinton St., West Seneca.
