LOCKPORT – A North Tonawanda heroin addict was promised drug treatment Tuesday in exchange for his guilty plea to stealing more than $6,000 earlier this year.

For Jonathan M. Grant, 25, of Robert Drive, it was the second time in two years he had pleaded guilty to grand larceny. This time, the plea was to attempted third-degree grand larceny for thefts between March 5 and April 16 from his step-parents and another woman. Restitution was capped at $6,290.

In May and June 2011, Grant stole $6,818 from two acquaintances by forging stolen checks. He was placed on probation then, but this time Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas said she intends to sentence Grant to the state prison system’s secure drug treatment facility for a three-month rehabilitation stint because of “his horrific heroin addiction.”

If Grant fails in treatment, he will likely serve two to four years in a regular cell, Farkas said. The official sentencing was set for Jan. 28.
