OLEAN – The city’s School Board has reduced its meeting schedule to once a month instead of the previous twice a month.
Superintendent Colleen Taggerty said each meeting probably would last about 90 minutes under the new schedule instead of the present average of about an hour for each meeting.
In September, Taggerty said the requirements of being a member of the School Board were among reasons for the change. “We have found that people are not willing to run for the school board,” Taggerty said. “We are looking at a couple questions surrounding the participation on the board,” Taggerty said. “Are terms too long now? Are people happy with the direction we are taking the district? We are trying to find out the reason for people not wanting to be a part of the education process.”
The proposals have no bearing on finances, as school board members in the Olean district are not paid.
According to the new schedule, the meeting dates for the remainder of the year are as follows. All meetings are held at 6:30 p.m., in the boardroom of the high school, unless otherwise noted:
Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at East View Elementary for an annual tour and visit.
Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014.
Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014.
Tuesday, March 18, 2014.
Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
Tuesday, May 06, 2014.
Tuesday, May 20, 2014.
Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Meeting to be held at noon to certify the budget vote for the district.
