LOCKPORT – A man shot in the foot Nov. 16 in the City of Lockport leaned on crutches Wednesday in State Supreme Court as he was arraigned on drug-dealing charges.
Kevon L. Sykes, 23, of Caledonia Street, Lockport, was one of nine people rounded up Tuesday on indictment warrants accusing them of dealing drugs in the City or Town of Lockport.
Capt. Richard L. Podgers, Lockport chief of detectives, said Sykes hasn’t cooperated in helping police solve the shooting, which occurred at Pine and Genesee streets. A crime scene video seems to show a verbal altercation between two persons among a knot of witnesses, and the victim being shot as he runs away from the scene.
Sykes, who also lists an address on East Delavan Avenue in Buffalo, pleaded not guilty to two counts each of third-degree criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance, stemming from alleged drug sales to a police informant.
Two of the deals were recorded on audio tape and one on video, Assistant District Attorney John P. Granchelli said.
Also arraigned on the same charges Wednesday was Jerome Drake, 36, of North Transit Street, Lockport. His alleged drug deals occurred in March 2012.
State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. set bail for both men at $2,000.
Tuesday, six others appeared in Niagara County Court after being picked up in an early morning sweep by the Niagara County Drug Task Force along with members of the Lockport Police, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, the State Division of Parole, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the Buffalo office of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Niagara Falls Police Department.
Police Chief Lawrence M. Eggert said the probe, which lasted more than a year, was led by Lockport Detective Kevin Newman, who recruited informants to help gather evidence against the suspects.
Arraigned Tuesday on two counts each of third-degree sale and possession of controlled substances were Nathaniel Carson Jr., 23, of Clinton Street; Ashley Boyer, 27, of West Avenue; Curtis McCoy, 51, of Garden Street; Anderson Davis Jr., 20, of High Street, Lockport; and Terrance Hardy, 29, of Myrtle Avenue, Gasport.
Also, Latasha Ford, 32, of Robinson Road, Lockport, who was incarcerated in the Niagara County Jail on unrelated charges, was charged with one count each of third-degree sale and possession.
Jeanine L. Burton, 23, of Niagara Falls, who is finishing an 18-month sentence in Albion Correctional Facility for selling cocaine in Lockport in 2011, was charged with one count each of third-degree sale and possession.
