Events for people with disabilities

Phoenix Frontier, a human services agency, offers day programs for individuals with disabling conditions that impact their ability to work. Persons served range from ages 16 to 65, and disabilities include mental retardation, developmental disabilities (cerebral palsy, autism, seizures, and neurological impairment), alcoholism, substance abuse, physical disabilities, blindness or visual impairment, traumatic brain injury, mental health and more. Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center, 50 E. North St., diagnoses and treats children and adults with communication disorders. The center provides speech-language evaluations and therapy, hearing evaluations, hearing aids, assistive listening and speaking devices, and support groups. It also offers an early childhood program, which includes an early intervention program for infants through 3 years, a preschool for children 3 to 5 years, and kindergarten. The center has offices in Buffalo, Amherst, Silver Creek and West Seneca. For information, call 885-8318.

Gateway Longview, 6350 Main St., Amherst, a multiservice agency serving children and families, offers special education and intensive support services for children ages 3 to 21 with severe emotional, behavior and learning problems. For information, call 633-7266.

Guild Care, 1170 Main St., is an adult day health program helping adults, 18 and older, with medical and vision needs to maintain independence. Its services include nursing supervision and medication assistance and teaching; personal care; dietary consultation; physical, occupational and speech therapy; assisted transportation; vision rehabilitation, social work; activities and outings, with snack and hot lunch daily. Native American Community Services, 1005 Grant St., provides assistance to developmentally disabled individuals and their families in both Erie and Niagara counties through the Medicaid Services Coordination Program. Services can be provided to off-reservation Native Americans as well as other Western New York community members. For information, call 874-4460.
