The Buffalo Athletic Club has sold its co-ed health clubs in Buffalo and Rochester to L.A. Fitness. The company’s women’s clubs are not affected by the sale.
Rick Leugemors, Buffalo Athletic Club owner, sent emails to club employees Thursday night informing them of the sale, which is expected to close Monday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
As of Monday, L.A. Fitness will own the BAC locations in downtown Buffalo on Delaware Avenue, on Union Road in Orchard Park, the Eastern Hills location on Transit Road in Clarence, near the Boulevard Mall on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst and BAC Extreme on Union Road in Cheektowaga, as well as two Rochester Athletic Club locations in Rochester.
The Buffalo Athletic Club will retain its women-only BAC for Women clubs: the so-called Colvin location on Eggert Road in the Town of Tonawanda, one on Evans Street in Amherst and another on French Road in Depew. It will also retain three female-only RAC for Women locations in Rochester.
Fitness instructors, who teach classes such as yoga and spinning, often travel to several and will continue working for both the L.A. Fitness locations and Buffalo Athletic Club locations through February, but they were informed they will need to choose whether they want to stay with the BAC and RAC for Women locations or sever ties and move on with L.A. Fitness as of Feb. 28.
The Buffalo Athletic Club was founded by Rick Rugg and Bob Schiffhauer in 1980. California-based L.A. Fitness was founded in 1984 and now has more than 500 gyms throughout the United States and Canada. In Western New York, L.A. Fitness has three locations: at 1893 Elmwood Ave., on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Niagara Falls and on Transit Road in Clarence.
Calls to the Buffalo Athletic Club were referred to a public relations company, which declined to comment. L.A. Fitness did not return calls.
