Playing career

1979 Drafted by the Sabres in the second round, 32nd overall, in NHL Entry Draft.

1985-86 Scored 20 goals in 54 games, the most goals he would score in one season.

1987-89 Served as captain of the Sabres. In 1989 he was traded to the New York Rangers in exchange for a draft pick, used to select Richard Smehlik.

• Ruff played in 691 NHL games, scoring 105 goals and adding 195 assists for 300 points with 1,264 penalty minutes. In 52 playoff games, Ruff had 11 goals, 13 assists and 193 penalty minutes.

Coaching career

1993-97 Served as an assistant coach of the Florida Panthers.

July 21, 1997

Named the 15th head coach of the Buffalo Sabres. In his first season, the Sabres advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, losing to Washington.

1998-99

Sabres sweep Ottawa in four games to reach the Stanley Cup finals for the second time in team history, then lose to the Dallas Stars in six.

2005-2007

Led the Sabres to back-to-back Eastern Conference finals appearances only to lose to Carolina in 2006 and Ottawa in 2007. He was the NHL Coach of the Year in 2006.

2010

Named an associate coach for Team Canada, which won the gold medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Jan. 6, 2011

Became only the 16th coach in NHL history to win 500 games, and just the second to win 500 games while only having coached one team.

Feb. 20, 2013

Ruff is fired after coaching 1,165 regular-season games for Buffalo, compiling 571 wins, 432 losses, 78 ties and 84 overtime losses.
