LOCKPORT – Lockport’s first chalk festival, dubbed Sweet Chalk Fest by promoter Ellen Martin, owner of Sweet Sixteen Cafe, is taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on Canal Street.
Headlining the event will be Carolyn Schultz of Orlando, Fla., recently crowned Maestro Madonnari, or master street painter, by the Florida Chalk Art Association. Schultz is to reproduce the Mona Lisa in chalk on the Canal Street sidewalk.
“It’s going to take her two days to do it,” Martin said.
Also, 10 local artists will have the opportunity to display their talents, and the student division will have a “best in show” award. There will be a section for “Little Chalkers.”
Applications still are being taken for artists, both students and adults. Email jill@sweetriderentals.com, mmkochar@gmail.com or jwinter1215@gmail.com.
