Two tall ships sail into Canalside Thursday afternoon and begin the four-day Maritime Fest with its rowboat rentals, beer garden, music, screening of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and fireworks.
“We welcome the Lynx and Peacemaker to Canalside this weekend and invite the public to experience first-hand the maritime history and culture Canalside has to offer, tour the two tall ships – for both the educational and entertainment value – and take part in the events surrounding the popular festival,” said Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation Chairman Robert Gioia.
The Peacemaker, set to arrive at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, was built on a riverbank in southern Brazil using traditional methods and tropical hardwoods. With mahogany-finished cabins, it was modeled on the Cutty Sark, a 1869-era British clipper ship described by Wikipedia as a carrier of tea and wool. The Peacemaker was launched in 1989 and bought in 2000 by the Twelve Tribes, a religious group with communities in North and South America, Europe and Australia.
Its companion, the Lynx, is a schooner based in Newport Beach, Calif. It was built as an interpretation of an 1812 vessel of the same name that was captured by the British in 1813. This Lynx was designed based on historical data by builders in Rockport, Maine, and serves as a sailing classroom.
Activities from Thursday through Sunday include tours of the ships – $6 for the Lynx and $4 for the Peacemaker for adults, free for children under 12 – which are glimpses of boat-making history that goes back two centuries.
