LITTLE VALLEY – Cattaraugus County has helped farmers and other agricultural producers by creating an Internet site that ties them together to create an agritourism package for visitors.

The site, www.ccaghelp.com, does more than just tie the agriculture producers together.

“The site will have a newsletter that goes out to each person on it,” County IT developer Jeremy Knabb said. “It also has news aggregates that pull in stories from throughout the county, that are of interest to farmers and agricultural producers.”

The site also offers the consumer a way to find out where to go to buy produce grown from local sources. Cattaraugus County is home to farmers’ markets throughout the week at various places through the growing season. All of those times and locations are found on the site.

Specific kinds of farmers are on the site as well. One such farm, Blue Hill Farm, is in Cattaraugus County, but sells its products all across the state, Nabb said.

“They are listed on our site because they are in the county, but they make and sell high-end yogurt in Buffalo, and even New York City,” he said.

Another aspect of the site, to build better associations with where the food bought in stores comes from, is to build associations, such as a farmer in Allegany who grows sweet corn may sell his to a grocery in Olean. Similarly, organic milk producers in Great Valley may sell their product to a national vendor.

Nabb said the website is free to agricultural producers to post activities or even just have their business listed.
